Looking For Solopreneur Business Ideas? Here Are Some of the Great Things About Copywriting

Why Copywriting is Thriving in the Solopreneur Market

woman writing for her freelance copywriting business from a mountain hiking trail. she can run her business from anywhere.

No bosses, control over who you work with, work from anywhere, flexible hours, and you keep all the profits! Sounds like a dream right? These are the main reasons so many people are talking about or interested in being a solopreneur.

But even if you decide you want to go into business for yourself, there are a lot of options. It’s hard to tell which ones are realistic or if it’s BS.

I’ve been on the same journey for the last 7ish months. I haven’t found my perfect fit yet but I want to share what I have learned so far.

First up is copywriting. I split it into a series of posts because there is a lot of information and I don’t like to read long posts.

Part one: I talked about what copywriting is. I didn’t know when I started so no judgment if you don’t!

Copywriting Online: What is It?

If becoming a freelance copywriter appeals to you, these are some of the best things I discovered about writing copy online.

Stability

Copywriting is one of the most stable solopreneur businesses right now. Once you get established there is plenty of work out there! Every product, service, individual, etc needs to have an online presence at this point.

Almost no one actually knows how to do it well (even if they think they do). Plus it takes their focus away from running their business. It’s in their best interest to have someone do it for them.

A lot of industries worry about AI. I don’t buy into the fear but it’s not a real threat for copywriters. Copywriting is about relating to a specific audience and making emotional connections. AI, for all the progress it has made, isn’t very good at this.

Accessible — No degree required

Unlike some solopreneur ideas, you don’t need a degree or strong writing skills. Copywriting online relies on finding your people. The audience that you will connect with and the companies who appeal to them.

Obviously, if you aren’t a strong writer, you aren’t going to focus on writing for colleges or editors. You would focus on products that you relate to. One that wants a real vibe versus a college professor.

Low overhead

The biggest potential expense is the courses. But you can find everything you need online for free.

If you choose to go through structure courses, there are a ton of them. I went through the Write Your Way to Freedom. The owner, Sarah Turner, has a YouTube channel where she shares most of the same information for free. The free lessons aren’t structured and you don’t have the support from the community if you get stuck.

You will end up investing in a website and other tools that will make your job easier/faster. But all you truly need is an email address and the copywriting basics.

High earning potential

Depending on what kind of copy you focus on and how much you want to work, you can make A LOT. One copywriter from Write Your Way to Freedom decided he wanted fewer clients but bigger projects. So he started ghostwriting books (still considered copywriting). He does one project every 3 months and charges 40k. He has a waitlist at this point so he is set for a while.

Another decided to work for one client who needed a lot of work every month. She has a contract with them now and a 20k retainer every month.

And once you establish yourself, you may not need to work on acquiring new clients, they will come to you.

Freedom!

Yes, you can work from anywhere. But you also control what you do and who you work with.

The client is a jerk? Don’t work with them.

They want you to lie to the customer? Drop them.

Selling a product that hurts the environment or the public? Move on.

Obviously, you handle it professionally. But the ability to choose clients whose values align with mine was one of the main reasons this appealed to me.

Fun

I love researching and getting to explore new subjects. A lot of copywriting is going down rabbit holes when you research. This is another reason it appealed to me.

There are SO MANY directions you can take your copywriting, it’s hard to get bored. I tend to lose interest when I feel I’ve mastered something. There is always something new to learn in copywriting.

It’s also fun (and fulfilling) to get people excited about products that you believe in.

That’s a lot of great reasons to look into copywriting. Even if you don’t want to start a copywriting business, it is an excellent skill to have for all businesses. Next post I will talk about the negatives.
